I've been avoiding making reaction posts when things come out because people have Feelings and I never feel like I get enough processing time, and then by the time I've processed everything it seems way too late to make a reaction post.
So. Spoilers.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.
*cough*
This has got to be one of the most faithful adaptations I've ever seen. It nailed almost everything: Plot, characters, dialogue, all of it was lifted straight out, with minimal changes for screen (one big exception, below), which doesn't surprise me given how much input Gaiman had.
Not that having Gaiman wasn't a downside sometimes: There's too much Telling instead of Showing with the narrator, and a lot of it was shown anyway, so it seems to have been included only because those lines from the book were so good they couldn't bear to leave them out... even though it resulted in reptition like you'd see in a kids' movie where the audience can't be trusted to get it the first time. That got annoying. On the other hand, I loved the narrative voice of the book, so I was happy hearing the lines.
They left out a few things (like the biker gang who followed the horsemen, constantly changing their names), which, I have no problem with, and added a few, some small, like fleshing out scenes of Aziraphale and Crowley's friendship over the millenia, and then that MASSIVE one that took up the last half of the last episode. I've got to say I was terrified when I realised the book plot had been wrapped up with so much time left to go because DON'T YOU DARE FUCK IT UP. And they didn't.
Every time I re-read the book I'm surprised by how long you can go without a scene involving either angel or demon, and I'm really glad the show recognised their strength as protagonists and spent so much extra time on them and their relationship. If I wasn't a shipper before, I am now.
Massive kudos to Sheen and Tennant for their work. It was hammy and over the top, sure, but these are over the top characters, and the subtler bits, the quiet moments of adoration on Crowley's face or Aziraphale's cautious joy just made it for me.
I know there are complaints around and some have merit and all buuuuttt.... I enjoyed it and just want to enjoy it without lots of heavy discourse.
